Lambing Kit
Lambing season is extremely fun and occasionally stressful. The best way to ensure a healthy and stress free season is to be prepared. You will need to create a Lambing Kit. Multi Layer Tool Box
Towels
Thermometer
Blue Bulb Syringe- clears mucus if the baby seems to be in distress
Antiseptic Wipes- all instruments and equipment must be cleaned before using. Also if Mom is not nursing you will need to clean off her teets.
Gloves- it gets really messy if you have to be involved
Lamb Milk Replacer- if nursing is a problem you must be able to give the baby supplement ASAP
Screw On Bottle Caps- these fit on normal disposable water bottles if you need to supplement
Electrolytes- Mom will need this in her water to give her a boost after the trauma of birth
Nutri-Drench- We use this for the mom and the babies a few hours after birth
Drench Gun- You will need this to give the nutri drench
Scissors- Cut the umbilical cord about an inch from their body
Betadine- Dip the remaining side of the umbilical cord in this to clean for the baby
Syringes and Needles- when antibiotics and worming medication is called for
Heat Lamps- if they are born below freezing temps
Elastrator and Bands- to be used in the first week after birth to dock/band their tail. For a video on how to do this, click here.
Ear Tagger and Tags
Book- Storeys Guide to Raising Sheep is helpful with some birth problems that may happen and quick solutions. Read and be familiar with potential birth complications and how to recognize what is happening before Lambing Season begins.
